7-Day South Coast & Golden Circle Campervan Self-Drive

  • 7 days
  • Self-drive
  • Campervan
  • Next departures in May

A seven-day campervan journey from the Golden Circle to Jökulsárlón, with six suggested camping nights and time for a glacier walk or lagoon adventure. Campervan rental and a flexible itinerary; campsites and activities are booked separately.

Trip highlights

  • Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss on the Golden Circle
  • South Coast waterfalls and the volcanic coast near Vík
  • Two nights around Skaftafell for walks and optional glacier activities
  • Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and the nearby ice-strewn beach
  • Three campervan choices, with campsite and activity recommendations

About this trip

Follow South Iceland in stages, with two nights around Selfoss and two around Skaftafell. Those longer stays give you a practical base for sightseeing and a choice of optional activities without packing up every morning. This route returns along the South Coast rather than attempting the full Ring Road. Choose a compact automatic camper for two, a larger automatic for up to three, or a manual family camper for up to five, after checking the bed sizes and luggage space. Choose your dates and campervan in the booking calendar. You pay through Bókun checkout, then FAR arranges your selected vehicle with Rent.is. Your booking details record the agreed rental interval and any selected extras.

Designed for May–September travel, subject to road conditions, vehicle supply and each campsite’s operating dates. This is a suggested travel window, not confirmed departure availability.

Choose Compact 2 only if you plan to use campsite electricity each night: the Fiat Doblo Maxi’s heater and cooler require a mains connection. Check electric-pitch availability separately; suggested campsites are not reserved.

Itinerary — 7 days

The shape of your trip

11 stops · 7 days

A suggested route for your campervan trip. Adapt each day to the weather, road conditions and your own pace.

  1. Day 1

Keflavík pickup and a gentle start in Selfoss

    1 stop

Collect your campervan near Keflavík Airport, allow time for the handover, and ask the supplier to demonstrate the heater, water system and any cooking kit you selected. Buy groceries before heading towards Selfoss. Keep the first day light: a riverside stroll and an early campsite arrival are enough after a flight. If you are tired after overnight travel, rest before driving and let us adjust the first night. Gesthús is the suggested base; its pitch and any electricity are paid separately.

Driving: A modest arrival transfer, with handover, shopping and rest taking priority. Exact pickup time and first-night routing depend on your flight.

    Suggested overnight area: Selfoss

    Campsites to consider

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

  2. Day 2

The Golden Circle: Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss

    4 stops

Make a loop from Selfoss through Þingvellir, where marked paths bring you into the rift landscape, then continue to the Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss. Leave time to walk between viewpoints rather than treating the day as a sequence of car parks. Return to your Selfoss campsite for a second night. If you choose the optional Silfra snorkelling experience, build the day around its confirmed meeting time and check age, swimming and medical requirements before booking.

Driving: A full sightseeing day on the Golden Circle. Optional guided activities replace some independent stops; they do not simply add to the same schedule.

    Suggested overnight area: Selfoss

    Campsites to consider

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

  3. Day 3

    Waterfalls, Vík and Kirkjubæjarklaustur

    4 stops

Head east along Route 1, choosing stops at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss before reaching Vík. At the black-sand coast, follow the current warning signs and keep well away from the water: dangerous waves can reach far up the beach. Continue across the South Coast towards Kirkjubæjarklaustur for the night. Kirkjubær II is a suggested campervan campsite with a service building; pitches and electric spaces are first come, first served. Arrive within the operator’s check-in window.

Driving: One of the longer sightseeing days. Choose a short list of stops and aim to reach camp well before the reception closes.

    Suggested overnight area: Kirkjubæjarklaustur

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

  4. Day 4

Skaftafell trails and a glacier adventure

    1 stop

Drive east to Skaftafell and settle into a slower day near Vatnajökull. The national park’s marked trails give you options according to weather and energy; ask at the visitor centre before choosing a walk. A guided glacier hike is a separate optional booking and is the appropriate way to go onto the ice. Stay at Skaftafell Campground, where showers and electricity are available but indoor cooking facilities are not. Cook using your own or selected rental equipment and use only designated facilities.

Driving: A shorter transfer leaves room for one substantial walk or guided activity. Match the plan to the selected tour’s check-in time and minimum age.

    Suggested overnight area: Skaftafell

    Campsites to consider

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

    Optional experiences · extra cost
  5. Day 5

    Jökulsárlón and the glacier-lagoon coast

    2 stops

Travel out to Jökulsárlón to watch the lagoon’s changing ice from the shore. Visit the nearby beach only where current conditions allow and stay clear of the surf. A guided kayaking trip on the lagoon can be added for suitable travellers when its calendar is open; it is not included in the rental. Return to Skaftafell for a second camping night. Keeping the same base avoids a long eastward move and leaves room to change the order of these two days if weather affects an activity.

Driving: An out-and-back day along Route 1. Confirm any lagoon activity before rearranging the campsite plan.

    Suggested overnight area: Skaftafell

    Campsites to consider

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

    Optional experiences · extra cost
  6. Day 6

Return along the South Coast to Reykjavík

    1 stop

Follow Route 1 west, using the return journey for a favourite stop you skipped earlier. Do not attempt every waterfall again: this is a transfer day with time needed for meals and breaks. Continue to Reykjavík and spend the last camping night within reach of Keflavík. Reykjavík Eco Campsite provides a practical city base and recommends advance booking; Hafnarfjörður Camping is an alternative towards the airport side of the capital. Neither stay is included or reserved by this itinerary.

Driving: A substantial westbound transfer. Keep activities light and agree the final campsite with your return time; an early flight may require an airport-area alternative.

Suggested overnight area: Reykjavík or Hafnarfjörður

    Campsites to consider
    Alternative campsites

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

  7. Day 7

    Keflavík return and departure

Pack the camper, clear rubbish and return the vehicle with the fuel level and condition required by your rental agreement. Allow time for the inspection and the airport shuttle before airline check-in. A city walk or other stop is possible only when your flight and confirmed return time leave a comfortable margin. No campsite is planned for this final day. The package includes up to seven 24-hour rental periods, with return planned today. Confirm the pickup and return timestamps; an extension beyond that allowance costs extra.

Driving: Allow for the drive to the rental office, refuelling, vehicle handover and airport transfer. Do not schedule a timed excursion before a tight departure.

Frequently asked questions

What do I book?

You book a self-drive itinerary and your selected campervan rental. The campervan is your overnight accommodation. Hotel rooms, campsite pitches, campsite fees, meals and sightseeing activities are not included unless your checkout explicitly lists an extra. The daily campsite suggestions help you plan; they are not reservations.

How do payment and vehicle arrangements work?

Choose the trip, dates and vehicle option and pay through Bókun checkout. FAR then arranges your selected vehicle with Rent.is and sends the rental details. FAR handles the supplier booking manually after checkout; the website does not show a live Rent.is fleet feed. Tell us your flight times and all travellers’ ages so we can finalise the handover and vehicle requirements.

Is the price per person or per campervan?

The rental price is for one campervan for the full rental interval shown in your booking. It is not multiplied by the number of people sharing that vehicle. Optional activities may be priced per person, while rental extras may be priced per item, per day or per booking; check each line before paying.

How many rental days are included?

The seven-day itineraries include up to seven 24-hour rental periods and six suggested camping nights. The ten-day itinerary includes up to ten 24-hour rental periods and nine suggested camping nights. The planned return is still on itinerary day seven or ten; the extra rental allowance accommodates different arrival and departure hours. Confirm the exact pickup and return times when booking. A return beyond the included allowance requires an agreed extension and may cost more. Unused rental time is not refunded.

Which vehicle should we choose?

Compact 2 is an automatic Fiat Doblo Maxi for two, with a fixed double bed; its heater and cooler require campsite electricity. Comfort 3 is an automatic Renault Trafic with a wider shared sleeping platform for up to three. Family 5 is a manual Renault Master with two shared beds and a supplier capacity of five. Compare the bed measurements as well as the passenger count; five adults may find the Master cramped. Child-seat requirements and the exact vehicle setup are checked for your party.

Are bedding and cooking equipment included?

The base product is the campervan rental and itinerary. Bedding, kitchenware and camping furniture are not included unless listed in your selected checkout package. The supplier offers an optional Essential Pack covering sleeping bags, a camping set, kitchenware, GPS, WiFi and extra drivers; choose the equipment you need before paying. The Compact 2 heater and cooler require campsite electricity. Trafic and Master have Webasto heating. Use campsite toilets and showers; these vehicles are not sold as having a bathroom.

Are campsites reserved for us?

No. Choose and pay for your campsites separately. Some campsites require or recommend advance booking; others operate on a first-come basis. Opening dates, electricity spaces and services can change. Check each linked campsite’s own information for your travel date and keep a practical alternative. For Compact 2, secure an electric pitch each night to use the heater and cooler; a general campsite space does not guarantee an electrical connection. Use designated campsites for campervan overnight stops.

Can we drive into the Highlands or cross rivers?

These itineraries use the main-road network. The three proposed campers are two-wheel-drive vehicles and are not for F-roads, river crossings or off-road driving. Do not follow a navigation shortcut onto a restricted road. Check road and weather conditions each day and follow the rental agreement.

What insurance is included?

Basic CDW is included in the campervan rental. Platinum Zero is an optional paid upgrade, but it must be selected if any driver is aged 18–20. Exclusions still apply. Read the policy, deposit requirements and excess shown for your booking. Wind damage to doors, water or river damage, underbody damage and recovery can fall outside cover; do not assume that an upgrade covers every event.

What extra costs should we budget for?

Budget for fuel, campsite pitches and electricity, food, parking, tolls and optional activities. Your vehicle checkout should account for applicable VAT and mandatory rental road charges; review the full total and anything explicitly payable on collection. Optional insurance, extra drivers, child seats and rental equipment must be selected and priced for the complete rental interval.

What are the driver requirements?

Drivers must be at least 18 and have held a driving licence for at least 12 months. Bring your original physical driving licence and identification, plus a physical payment card belonging to a listed driver who is present at pickup. If any driver is aged 18–20, select the paid Platinum Zero upgrade when booking. An international driving permit may be needed for a licence not in Latin characters. Check the supplier’s deposit requirements for your chosen cover.

What are the cancellation and change terms?

Free cancellation and a full refund if your cancellation reaches info@fartravel.is at least 48 hours before your scheduled campervan pickup (Iceland local time). Cancellations received less than 48 hours before pickup and no-shows are charged 100%. No refund for early return. Contact FAR Travel to cancel; cancellations and refunds are handled manually.

Is the seven-day Ring Road trip right for us?

It is a faster summer circuit with several long travel days and limited time for guided activities. It does not include the Golden Circle, Snæfellsnes, the Westfjords or the Highlands. Choose the ten-day Ring Road for more time, or the seven-day South Coast route if you prefer fewer overnight moves. Never continue driving when tired or when road conditions make the planned leg unsuitable.
