10-Day Iceland Ring Road Campervan Self-Drive

  • 10 days
  • Self-drive
  • Campervan
  • Next departures in May

Our recommended full-circle campervan itinerary: ten days and nine suggested camping nights through the Golden Circle, South Coast, Eastfjords and North Iceland. Choose your camper and add only the experiences that fit your pace.

Trip highlights

  • A complete circuit with nine suggested camping nights
  • A separate Golden Circle day before the South Coast
  • Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón and the Eastfjords
  • Mývatn, Goðafoss and time around Akureyri
  • Optional glacier hiking, lagoon kayaking and geothermal bathing

About this trip

Take the Ring Road in a counterclockwise circuit, with a gentle arrival, a dedicated Golden Circle day and room to explore the glacier coast and northern landscapes. This is a road trip on the main-road network, without Highland tracks or river crossings. The campervan is your accommodation; the package does not include hotels or campsite bookings. Choose your dates and vehicle in the booking calendar and pay through Bókun checkout. FAR then arranges your selected vehicle with Rent.is for the agreed rental interval. The route is a starting point, and your final overnight choices should reflect campsite openings, weather and flight times.

Designed for May–September travel. Early and late season need individual campsite and mountain-pass checks; no year-round Ring Road availability is promised.

Choose Compact 2 only if you plan to use campsite electricity each night: the Fiat Doblo Maxi’s heater and cooler require a mains connection. Check electric-pitch availability separately; suggested campsites are not reserved.

Itinerary — 10 days

The shape of your trip

17 stops · 10 days

A suggested route for your campervan trip. Adapt each day to the weather, road conditions and your own pace.

  1. Day 1

Arrive at Keflavík and settle in Selfoss

    1 stop

Collect the campervan, check its controls with the rental team and shop for the first meals. Travel to Selfoss when rested, leaving the evening free to organise the sleeping and cooking setup. Gesthús is the suggested first campsite. If your flight arrives late or overnight travel has left you tired, a closer first stop is more sensible; plan a closer first stop and tell us your flight times when booking.

Driving: Arrival day is for handover, supplies and rest. Do not add the full Golden Circle after an overnight flight.

    Suggested overnight area: Selfoss

    Campsites to consider

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

  2. Day 2

    Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss

    4 stops

Use a full day for the Golden Circle, linking Þingvellir’s marked walking paths with the geothermal area at Geysir and the viewpoints at Gullfoss. Return to Selfoss for a second night, so luggage can stay organised and you have a straightforward start towards the South Coast tomorrow. Silfra snorkelling can be added for eligible travellers, but choose an actual departure first and allow enough time for its briefing, equipment and changing.

Driving: A sightseeing loop from the same campsite. An optional guided experience should shape the day’s timing rather than be squeezed between every stop.

    Suggested overnight area: Selfoss

    Campsites to consider

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

  3. Day 3

    South Coast waterfalls to Kirkjubæjarklaustur

    2 stops

Follow Route 1 past the South Coast waterfalls, then through Vík and across the lava-country landscapes to Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Choose stops according to the weather, keeping a clear margin for the campsite’s arrival window. At coastal viewpoints, obey closures and wave warnings. Kirkjubær II is suggested for the night; it accepts campervans on a first-come basis and has shared kitchen and washing facilities. Optional activities are best kept for tomorrow rather than extending this already varied travel day.

Driving: A long sightseeing day with several tempting stops. Prioritise two or three highlights and check the campsite’s arrival arrangements.

    Suggested overnight area: Kirkjubæjarklaustur

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

  4. Day 4

    Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón and Höfn

    3 stops

Continue through the glacier country around Skaftafell, then follow Route 1 to Jökulsárlón and on to Höfn. Choose either an independent park walk or one suitably timed guided glacier hike; a long hike plus a lagoon activity would make this day too crowded. Near Höfn, the harbour is a pleasant place to finish the day. Höfn Campsite is the recommended overnight, subject to its opening dates and space on arrival.

Driving: Allow most of the day for the glacier coast. A guided hike replaces other stops, and its finishing time must leave room to reach Höfn.

    Suggested overnight area: Höfn

    Campsites to consider

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

    Optional experiences · extra cost
  5. Day 5

    The Eastfjords to Egilsstaðir

    1 stop

Trace the coastal route through the Eastfjords, taking breaks in small villages rather than choosing an unfamiliar shortcut. Continue to Egilsstaðir for groceries, laundry or an easy evening beside the camper. Camp Egilsstaðir is a suggested base with year-round operations, although facilities and pitch availability still need checking for your date. This day is about the road, the fjords and unhurried stops; a long side trip to a remote valley is not required to make it worthwhile.

Driving: Stay on the planned main-road route. Navigation shortcuts across mountain roads can materially change the driving conditions and duration.

    Suggested overnight area: Egilsstaðir

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

  6. Day 6

Across the northeast to Mývatn and Laugar

    3 stops

Drive west from Egilsstaðir across the northeastern interior on Route 1, checking weather and road conditions before leaving. Around Mývatn, choose a few marked sites such as Dimmuborgir and the lake viewpoints, giving each stop time rather than attempting the full Diamond Circle as well. Finish in the Laugar area at CJA camping. This is a useful base west of the lake; the operator lists electricity and year-round camping, with different ground arrangements in winter.

Driving: A mountain-pass transfer followed by selected Mývatn stops. Dettifoss or Húsavík would be an additional detour and requires a revised schedule.

Suggested overnight area: Laugar, west of Mývatn

    Campsites to consider

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

  7. Day 7

Goðafoss and a slower day in Akureyri

    2 stops

Visit Goðafoss on the way to Akureyri, then choose how to use a less hurried afternoon. Explore the town, take a separately booked whale-watching departure, or reserve admission to Forest Lagoon. Pick one principal activity and leave the rest of the day flexible. Camp Hamrar, on the outskirts of Akureyri, is the suggested overnight and offers shared facilities and electric connections. The campsite fee and any optional experience are paid separately.

Driving: A shorter transfer day gives room for one optional activity. Check the exact meeting point and allow time to park the camper.

    Suggested overnight area: Akureyri

    Campsites to consider

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

  8. Day 8

    Northwest Iceland and Hvammstangi

    2 stops

Leave Akureyri on Route 1 and travel through Northwest Iceland towards Hvammstangi. Use town stops for food and fuel, and enjoy the change from northern mountains to the quieter bays of Húnaþing. A short walk near the harbour makes a gentle finish. Kirkjuhvammur, also listed locally as Hvammur Camping, is the suggested campsite. Check current operating dates and facilities before setting out; the overnight is a recommendation, not a reservation.

Driving: A main-road travel day. A full Tröllaskagi or Vatnsnes peninsula detour would add significant driving and is not part of the base route.

    Suggested overnight area: Hvammstangi

    Campsites to consider

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

  9. Day 9

    West Iceland and Reykjavík

    2 stops

Travel south through West Iceland, using Borgarnes for a break before continuing to Reykjavík. Keep optional detours modest so the final evening is useful for sorting luggage and preparing the vehicle return. Reykjavík Eco Campsite is the suggested base, with Hafnarfjörður Camping an alternative. Book a pitch directly where the campsite requires it, and check whether your return flight calls for a closer airport-area overnight. The last night should make departure easier, not introduce another long drive.

Driving: Keep a generous margin for the final transfer. Snæfellsnes is not included as an extra peninsula drive on this day.

Suggested overnight area: Reykjavík or Hafnarfjörður

    Campsites to consider
    Alternative campsites

Check seasonal opening dates, facilities and space directly with the campsite. Camping fees are additional.

  10. Day 10

    Return the campervan at Keflavík

Follow the supplier’s return instructions, refuel as agreed and allow time to inspect the vehicle with the rental team. The airport shuttle follows the handover; leave enough room before your airline’s check-in deadline. This tenth itinerary day has no camping night. The package includes up to ten 24-hour rental periods, with return planned today. Confirm the exact pickup and return timestamps; additional time beyond that allowance needs an agreed extension.

Driving: Plan around the confirmed vehicle return and flight, including refuelling, handover and shuttle time.

Frequently asked questions

What do I book?

You book a self-drive itinerary and your selected campervan rental. The campervan is your overnight accommodation. Hotel rooms, campsite pitches, campsite fees, meals and sightseeing activities are not included unless your checkout explicitly lists an extra. The daily campsite suggestions help you plan; they are not reservations.

How do payment and vehicle arrangements work?

Choose the trip, dates and vehicle option and pay through Bókun checkout. FAR then arranges your selected vehicle with Rent.is and sends the rental details. FAR handles the supplier booking manually after checkout; the website does not show a live Rent.is fleet feed. Tell us your flight times and all travellers’ ages so we can finalise the handover and vehicle requirements.

Is the price per person or per campervan?

The rental price is for one campervan for the full rental interval shown in your booking. It is not multiplied by the number of people sharing that vehicle. Optional activities may be priced per person, while rental extras may be priced per item, per day or per booking; check each line before paying.

How many rental days are included?

The seven-day itineraries include up to seven 24-hour rental periods and six suggested camping nights. The ten-day itinerary includes up to ten 24-hour rental periods and nine suggested camping nights. The planned return is still on itinerary day seven or ten; the extra rental allowance accommodates different arrival and departure hours. Confirm the exact pickup and return times when booking. A return beyond the included allowance requires an agreed extension and may cost more. Unused rental time is not refunded.

Which vehicle should we choose?

Compact 2 is an automatic Fiat Doblo Maxi for two, with a fixed double bed; its heater and cooler require campsite electricity. Comfort 3 is an automatic Renault Trafic with a wider shared sleeping platform for up to three. Family 5 is a manual Renault Master with two shared beds and a supplier capacity of five. Compare the bed measurements as well as the passenger count; five adults may find the Master cramped. Child-seat requirements and the exact vehicle setup are checked for your party.

Are bedding and cooking equipment included?

The base product is the campervan rental and itinerary. Bedding, kitchenware and camping furniture are not included unless listed in your selected checkout package. The supplier offers an optional Essential Pack covering sleeping bags, a camping set, kitchenware, GPS, WiFi and extra drivers; choose the equipment you need before paying. The Compact 2 heater and cooler require campsite electricity. Trafic and Master have Webasto heating. Use campsite toilets and showers; these vehicles are not sold as having a bathroom.

Are campsites reserved for us?

No. Choose and pay for your campsites separately. Some campsites require or recommend advance booking; others operate on a first-come basis. Opening dates, electricity spaces and services can change. Check each linked campsite’s own information for your travel date and keep a practical alternative. For Compact 2, secure an electric pitch each night to use the heater and cooler; a general campsite space does not guarantee an electrical connection. Use designated campsites for campervan overnight stops.

Can we drive into the Highlands or cross rivers?

These itineraries use the main-road network. The three proposed campers are two-wheel-drive vehicles and are not for F-roads, river crossings or off-road driving. Do not follow a navigation shortcut onto a restricted road. Check road and weather conditions each day and follow the rental agreement.

What insurance is included?

Basic CDW is included in the campervan rental. Platinum Zero is an optional paid upgrade, but it must be selected if any driver is aged 18–20. Exclusions still apply. Read the policy, deposit requirements and excess shown for your booking. Wind damage to doors, water or river damage, underbody damage and recovery can fall outside cover; do not assume that an upgrade covers every event.

What extra costs should we budget for?

Budget for fuel, campsite pitches and electricity, food, parking, tolls and optional activities. Your vehicle checkout should account for applicable VAT and mandatory rental road charges; review the full total and anything explicitly payable on collection. Optional insurance, extra drivers, child seats and rental equipment must be selected and priced for the complete rental interval.

What are the driver requirements?

Drivers must be at least 18 and have held a driving licence for at least 12 months. Bring your original physical driving licence and identification, plus a physical payment card belonging to a listed driver who is present at pickup. If any driver is aged 18–20, select the paid Platinum Zero upgrade when booking. An international driving permit may be needed for a licence not in Latin characters. Check the supplier’s deposit requirements for your chosen cover.

What are the cancellation and change terms?

Free cancellation and a full refund if your cancellation reaches info@fartravel.is at least 48 hours before your scheduled campervan pickup (Iceland local time). Cancellations received less than 48 hours before pickup and no-shows are charged 100%. No refund for early return. Contact FAR Travel to cancel; cancellations and refunds are handled manually.

Is the seven-day Ring Road trip right for us?

It is a faster summer circuit with several long travel days and limited time for guided activities. It does not include the Golden Circle, Snæfellsnes, the Westfjords or the Highlands. Choose the ten-day Ring Road for more time, or the seven-day South Coast route if you prefer fewer overnight moves. Never continue driving when tired or when road conditions make the planned leg unsuitable.
