Overview
Baldur is the car ferry across Breiðafjörður. It runs between Stykkishólmur on the Snæfellsnes peninsula and Brjánslækur in the Westfjords, and the crossing takes two and a half hours. The operator's line is that it considerably shortens the route between the south and mid-west of the country and the Westfjords: driving instead means going the long way round, inland to the head of the fjord and back out again. We know of no other way to get a vehicle across the water, which is why this sailing matters to anyone joining West Iceland and the Westfjords in one self-drive route.
The ferry takes vehicles, and you add yours to the booking as an extra. There are options for a regular car up to five metres, a large car over two metres wide, a jeep, a motorcycle or scooter, a trailer, a motorhome up to five metres, and a bus. Anything over the standard length is charged by the extra metre, so you are asked for the length of the vehicle when you book, and for the registration number of a car. Off-road trucks are not covered by the motorhome option.
Be at the harbour thirty minutes before departure with the ticket ready, either on a phone or printed. The driver takes the car aboard alone and the other passengers walk on by the gangway, so the driver and at least one passenger each need a ticket with a readable QR code. There is a restaurant on board, and Wi-Fi.

Departure times vary by date, and the calendar shows the sailings for the date you choose. Cancelling more than twenty-four hours before departure costs nothing. Inside twenty-four hours half the fare is charged, and inside five hours the full fare.
