Overview

Learn the basics of ice climbing during a four-hour Skaftafell glacier hike, with certified instruction, glacier boots and technical equipment included.

The guide selects the climbing site and glacier route for current ice, weather and group ability. The minimum age is 12.

Itinerary

The guide may change the order, timing or accessibility of stops when weather, roads, glacier conditions or local closures require it.

  1. Skaftafell meeting point

    Check in at the Troll Expeditions Skaftafell terminal; this is a self-drive activity without Reykjavík pickup.

  2. Equipment and transfer

    Collect the supplied glacier gear, complete the safety briefing and travel toward the glacier.

  3. Glacier hike

    Hike on the glacier with a certified guide and learn how to use the supplied equipment safely.

  4. Supervised ice climbing

    Learn basic climbing technique and make supervised ascents using crampons, harness, rope and ice axes.

  5. Return to Skaftafell

    Visit Return to Skaftafell as part of the guided route. Timing and access can change with local conditions.
