Snæfellsjökull: Guided Glacier Summit Hike

  • Operated by North Ice

Overview

A guided glacier hike to the summit of Snæfellsjökull, meeting in Snæfellsbær on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, with crampons, ice axe, harness and rope provided.

A glacier guide leads the group throughout. The walk from the glacier parking area to the edge of the ice takes 40 to 60 minutes, and crampons, harness and rope go on there. From the base it is a further three to four hours to the top, with a lunch stop at the summit, and about three hours back down to the car.

The high point of Snæfellsjökull is 1,446 metres, but groups usually stop at 1,418 metres, as the last section is a steep slope onto a rock and ice peak. The minimum booking age is 14. Transport, food, hiking boots and poles are not included, though boots, poles, rain gear, gloves and hats can be rented from the operator.
