Horse Riding Through Lava and Black Sand near Húsavík

  • Operated by Lava Horses

Overview

Two hours on Icelandic horses from a farm near Húsavík, crossing river banks, lava, black sand and a birch wood away from any road.

The route leaves the Lava Horses farm and drops to the river, passing fields grazed by cattle in summer and sheep in autumn. It follows the water for a stretch, crosses a small lake and picks a line between mossy volcanic rock before opening onto a plain of black sand, then returns through the farm's own birch wood. There is room along the way to try the tölt.

Both advanced riders and beginners in reasonable physical shape can join, with a minimum age of 10 and a 100 kg weight limit. A riding helmet is provided; closed shoes, a windproof jacket and warm layers are not. Guests meet at the Lava Horses farm near Húsavík.
