Overview
An advanced riding programme at Vindheimamelar in Skagafjörður, where experienced riders work through the Icelandic horse's five gaits on two or three different horses.
The session runs at the Vindheimamelar show grounds and the country around them, splitting the time between practice and hacking out. A riding instructor who speaks English and German leads the group, and a helmet, rain jacket and trousers, and coffee or tea are provided. Riders are asked to describe their previous experience at checkout so suitable horses can be assigned.
This programme is not open to beginner riders, and the minimum age is 14. Icelandic law prohibits used riding equipment entering the country, including saddles, bridles, leather boots, other leather riding wear and gloves, so any gear you bring must be disinfected first. Meet at the office 20 minutes before the agreed departure time.
