Overview
An ATV route through the Hengill volcanic area to the geothermal springs at Hellisheiði, 3.5 hours on location from a base 15 minutes outside Reykjavík.
Departures run Thursday to Saturday from 15 May to 15 November, with optional hotel pickup at 13:00 and about 4.5 hours door to door. The trails cross lava fields to Lake Hafravatn and climb Stangarhóll, where the view reaches the south coast and Eyjafjallajökull on clear days, before the geothermal ground and hot springs at Hellisheiði.
The route is graded challenging. Overalls, a helmet, gloves, a balaclava and rain gear are provided, but food, drinks and footwear are not. Drivers must be 18 and hold a valid driving licence, passengers ride from age 8, and a shared ATV needs two riders, so odd-numbered groups take a single-rider place.
